Islas Canarias Restaurant in West Kendall is a great Cuban Restaurant. The food is consistently good. The have the best tasting croquetas. I have ordered vaca frita, chicken and potatoes, sandwiches, among others and they have all been good. The restaurant is usually clean and nicely decorated. The service is spotty, at times is excellent and at other times is below par. Today service was good at the cafe window.

This is my favorite Cuban restaurant when I visit miami. It's a staple serving the best "croquettas de la casa" in all the state, followed by Versalles. It's traditional Cuban cuisine, except they no longer butter the Cuban bread on the table ( love the flavor) but I guess it's for health reasons, which makes sense. Now let's get into the good stuff: The location: off 137th Ave in an old shopping center, don't be surprised, there are so many ugly buildings with delicious food in miami, it's something you just have to get use to. If you want an authentic experience, this is the place, not a Cuban restaurant in Miami Beach. The menu: what can I say, there is such a variety !! Several pages worth, it includes shakes ( not the cookies and cream stuff, the real deal Cuban shakes like Mamey, Trigo and of course vanilla and chocolate), and coffee, we love our expresso! Yes, Cubans love milk shakes and coffee i would recommend to try mamey, for the first time, if you have never had it, it's probably one of the best shakes, it's a fruit that contains lots of fiber too! It's so great for digestion! Favorite dishes to try: Apps: the croquettes!!!! Malanga chips and plantain chips ( I love my chips!) Bistec empanizado ( breaded steak) it's huge and so delicious with white rice or Moro ( black rice and beans) and platanito maduros ( sweet plantains) or tostones if you like to be on the little salty side ( fried plantains) Vaca Frita ( shredded beef with onions) wow!! Amazing it has a limey taste and just goes perfect with white rice Sandwiches: any!! You can't go wrong Desserts: they are all pretty sweet Service: impeccable!! There is a hostess, she is a little old lady with glasses, she is so absolutely kind, when she sees me with my elderly grandparents she makes sure to get us seats closest to the door so they don't have to walk far into the restaurant, she always greets us with " hello my darlings" and makes us feel special, and it's genuine which is the best part. Our server: Rey, what can I say about Rey, he is sunshine in a bottle. This man caters to your every desire, he definitely has a soft spot for the elderly, very respectful and makes them feel valued and appreciated, Cuban culture respects their elders, especially those of us born in later times, the newer generation not so much. This man went out of his way all the time to do things for my grandparents, to the point where he saw my grandmother struggling cutting her food and he looked like he was write about to jump in and start helping her. I immediately got up and he said, cut it in little tiny pieces so it's easier for her to swallow. " I cannot thank him enough for watching out for me and my family and the rest of the people he was serving. He cracked jokes and engaged with his customers. We will always ask for Rey when we come, he is such a delight and works hard. Thank you Rey, your service was so amazing you are what inspired me to write this review! God bless you sir for your kindness!!

A Miami staple for Cuban food! Isla Canarias is one of my favorite croquetas de jamón since I can remember. They are one of the best in all of Miami. They are full of flavor, always fresh and the perfect bite. Even better when paired with a lime and saltine crackers. The best part is being able to stop by the ventanita to order some croquetas and a cortadito. The full Miami experience!

Every time I come to Miami to visit my in-laws we come to Islas Canarias. Honestly, best Cuban restaurant we've been to in the area. Better than Versailles. The portion sizes are bigger, the flavor is better, the prices are cheaper, and there's no lines. I think the pictures speak for themselves. The Bistecs are delicious and the sides are full of flavor. My father in law and wife like their vaca Frita and this is the only place that we know of that does vaca Frita with chicken. Honestly try it out for yourself and you won't be disappointed.

Watch out...because this is a place that is for locals...but if tourists catch wind of how good it is...then they're going to start venturing west and making the lines even longer. It's been around a long time. And here's why... This place is great. There's a drive through, a walk up service window, or you can eat inside at a table like a normal restaurant. Spanish and English are both spoken, but don't be surprised if your waitress really only knows Spanish. Super good service and everything here was clean. What to get...coffee (ask for the cortadito) or a batido de trigo. Cuban drinks are always have lots of sugar. To eat, croquetas. Get a bunch for the table to share. I had the croqueta preparada sándwich after eating two regular croquetas...and I could only finish half my sandwich. The full sandwich...no joke...probably weighed 3 pounds. It was so good. The ropa vieja and the yuca were also amazing. The tostones were good, but they didn't offer a sauce for them. Our group of 6 ate until we were stuffed, and lunch came out to $125 for all of us...and that's including tax and tip. This place gives an amazing value in the Miami area.

You can take the girl out of Hialeah, but you can't take the Hialeah out of the girl. Except, you know, this isn't in Hialeah, but it's Cuban food, which is what Hialeah is full of, so close enough. Prior to this visit, my only experience with Islas Canarias were their to-die-for croquetas. I had had them at some festivals, sometimes even at other shops or when family and friends brought them over to me. I had never visited the restaurant until this past December, and frankly, that's a downright shame. Elian D. joined me for dinner while I was in town, and of course, missing Cuban food terribly, I went all-out traditional in my order. We started off with sangria or rather I did. Elian ordered something else, the waiter messed up, but no matter - he joined me for sangria and let's just say the mistake was a welcome one. The sangria was fresh and flavorful. As far as appetizers go, they started us off with complimentary Cuban bread and butter, which to me was like seeing a long-lost friend (aside from Elian D, you know?). Yes, there's Cuban bread in Tallahassee, but it's not always warm and recently made. Yum! Other than that, you know we ordered the croquetas, which came with little sides of lime, which was a nice touch. For our mains, Elian got vaca frita (at least I think that's what he got) and it was accompanied by white rice and salad. I chose, given my traditional route, lechón asado, or the roasted pork, and it came with moro rice and boiled yuca. Let's just say the portions were massive, and given the fact that I had no idea if my hotel had a microwave or not, I was sad to not be able to take leftovers with me. Moreover, by the time we finished eating, we opted for coffee and I basically couldn't finish it as I was sleepy and afraid if I drank it all, well... I wouldn't sleep. Nevertheless, this just makes it more of a point to return to enjoy the restaurant full throttle because honestly they deserve our patronage. They got us in quickly sans reservations, plus the food was amazing. I know now firsthand why everyone raves about this place because now I'm raving about it, too!
